Every community starts somewhere. For All About Football, it started with a simple idea: there must be other people around here who just want a decent game of football without all the baggage of traditional leagues and clubs.

That idea became a session. That session became two. And now, across the Midlands, hundreds of players are part of something we're genuinely proud of. This is the story of how it happened, why it matters, and where we're heading next.

Where It All Began

All About Football started in Burton upon Trent. If you know Burton, you know it's a brilliant town with a strong sporting culture — but options for casual adult football were thin on the ground. You could join a Sunday league team (commitment, politics, 8am kick-offs in January), pay for a pitch and try to organise 10 mates who are all free on the same evening (herding cats), or just not play.

We wanted a fourth option: turn up, pay a few quid, play with whoever else turns up, and have a great time. No commitment beyond that single session. No trials, no minimum skill level, no drama.

The first session had a handful of players. Some knew each other, some didn't. By the end of the hour, everyone was already asking when the next one was. That's how you know you're onto something.

Growing Across the Midlands

Word spread the way it always does in football — through mates telling mates. "I played this thing on Tuesday night, it was brilliant, you should come." Within months, sessions were regularly full, and we started getting messages from people in nearby towns: "Any chance you'll do something in Derby?" "What about Stoke?"

So we expanded. Derby was the natural next step — a bigger city with a massive football culture and plenty of people looking for exactly what we offered. Then Lichfield, then Stoke-on-Trent, then Rotherham pushed us into South Yorkshire.

Each new venue follows the same approach. We find a quality 3G pitch with good facilities, set up regular sessions, and let the community build itself. We don't force growth — if there's demand in an area, we're there. If a session doesn't take off, we learn from it and try again differently.

Today, we run sessions in nine towns and cities: Burton upon Trent, Derby, Rotherham, Lichfield, Stoke-on-Trent, Tamworth, Stafford, Uttoxeter, and Swadlincote. You can see the full list on our Where We Play page.

More Than Just a Game

The thing that continually surprises us — though by now it probably shouldn't — is how much the community aspect matters to people. Yes, everyone comes for the football. But they stay for the people.

We've seen genuine friendships form between players who would never have crossed paths otherwise. A 22-year-old warehouse worker and a 45-year-old accountant don't have much in common on paper, but put them on the same team for an hour every Wednesday and something clicks. Football is the great equaliser — on the pitch, none of the outside stuff matters.

Some of our favourite moments over the past year:

  • Players organising their own five-a-side tournaments outside of AAF sessions, using the connections they made through us.
  • Players from different sessions linking up and forming friendships that extend well beyond the pitch.
  • New arrivals to the area — people who've moved for work and don't know anyone — finding their first local friends through football.
  • Dads bringing their teenage kids along, bridging the generation gap over a shared love of the game.

We've written separately about the profound impact this has on men's mental health, but the short version is: regular social contact through sport is one of the most powerful things you can do for your wellbeing.

What Makes Our Sessions Different

There's no shortage of casual football around. So what makes AAF sessions worth choosing? We think it comes down to a few things:

Balanced teams. We actively balance teams each session to ensure competitive, enjoyable games. Nobody wants to be on the wrong end of a 12-1 drubbing. Read more about how our team balancing works.

Welcoming atmosphere. We set the tone from the top: no aggressive tackles, no shouting at teammates, no egos. This isn't Sunday league. If you're worried about the vibe, have a read of what to expect at your first session — we think you'll be reassured.

Quality venues. We only use well-maintained 3G pitches with proper lighting and decent facilities. The surface you play on matters, especially for older players whose joints appreciate consistency.

Easy booking. Our app makes it simple to find sessions, book your spot, and see who else is playing. No WhatsApp group chaos, no chasing people for money. Just open the app, book, and turn up. Check out how it all works.

Fair pricing. We keep session costs as low as possible. This isn't a premium boutique fitness experience — it's football, and it should be accessible to everyone.

The Midlands Football Culture

We're lucky to be based in a part of the country with an incredibly deep football culture. The Midlands is home to some of the oldest football clubs in the world, and the passion for the game runs through every town and village.

But professional football is a spectator experience. What we're tapping into is something more grassroots — the desire to actually play, not just watch. The Midlands has always had strong recreational football participation, from park kickabouts to works teams to charity tournaments. We're simply providing a more organised, reliable, and welcoming version of what people have always wanted.

The geography helps too. The East and West Midlands are well connected, with most of our venues within 30-40 minutes of each other. A player in Swadlincote might play at their local session on Tuesday and pop over to Burton on Thursday. That cross-pollination between venues strengthens the whole community.

What's Next for All About Football

We're not done. Not by a long way. Our goal is to make casual football accessible to every adult in the Midlands who wants to play, and there are still plenty of towns and cities we haven't reached yet.

We're also investing in the experience itself. Our app is constantly improving, making it easier to find sessions, track your stats, and connect with other players. We're exploring special events — tournaments, charity matches, social gatherings — that bring the community together beyond regular sessions.

But the core will always stay the same: good football, good people, no nonsense. That's what got us here, and it's what will carry us forward.

Be Part of It

Whether you're a seasoned player or someone who hasn't touched a ball in years, there's a place for you in the All About Football community. We've got sessions across the Midlands at times that suit working adults, and every single one welcomes new faces.

The hardest part is turning up for the first time. After that, you're one of us.

Sign up to All About Football and join the fastest-growing casual football community in the Midlands. See you on the pitch.
